China factory activity shrinks for first time in over two years

Beijing to shut 1,000 manufacturing firms by 2020

BEIJING: China’s factory activity contracted for the first time in over two years in December, highlighting the challenges facing Beijing as it seeks to end a bruising trade war with Washington and reduce the risk of a sharper economic slowdown in 2019.

The increasing strain on factories signals a continued loss of momentum in China, adding to worries about softening global growth, especially if the Sino-U.S. dispute drags on.

Trade frictions are already disrupting global supply chains, fuelling concerns of a bigger blow next year to world trade, investment and shaky financial markets.

The official Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) – the first snapshot of China’s economy each month – fell to 49.4 in December, below the 50-point level that separates growth from contraction, a National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) survey showed on Monday.

It was the first contraction since July 2016 and the weakest reading since February 2016. Analysts had forecast it would dip to 49.9 from 50.0 the previous month.

China is expected to roll out more economic support measures in coming months on top of a raft of initiatives this year. A prolonged downturn in the factory sector, key for jobs, would likely spark further attempts to juice domestic demand.

In November, industrial output rose the least in nearly three years, while earnings growth at industrial firms fell for the first time in nearly three years.

A PMI sub-index on overall factory output prices fell to 43.3 in December from 46.4, signalling earnings erosion. A gauge on overall production fell to 50.8, the lowest since February, from 51.9.

New orders – an indicator of future activity – continued to soften, reinforcing views that business conditions in China will likely get worse before they get better.

A sub-index for total new orders contracted for the first time in at least a year, falling to 49.7 amid persistently weak demand at home and softening global growth.

New export orders shrank for a seventh straight month, with the sub-index falling to 46.6 from 47.0.

TRADE WAR UNCERTAINTIES

Many analysts doubt that Beijing and Washington can bridge their many differences and reach a comprehensive trade deal in the latest round of talks.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed early this month to a 90-day ceasefire that delayed a planned Jan. 1 U.S. increase of tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods while the two sides negotiate.

Trump said over the weekend that a possible trade deal was progressing well, but few concrete details have emerged.

The trade war has resulted in billions of dollars of losses for both sides this year, hitting industries from autos and technology to U.S. agriculture.

“There are many short-term orders from overseas but few long-term orders received by Chinese factories as caution remains amid the trade uncertainties,” said Nie Wen, economist at Hwabao Trust in Shanghai.

“The medium to long-term export prospect is not optimistic particularly.”

Warehouses across the U.S. are bursting with Chinese goods after retailers stocked up before fresh tariffs, suggesting little chance of a near-term export rebound even if a trade deal is reached.

CONSUMER CAUTION

One bright spot in the downbeat data was a modest pick-up in the services sector. The official non-manufacturing PMI rose to 53.8 from 53.4.

While that offers some cushion – services account for over half of the economy – consumers remain cautious.

China’s auto sector has been particularly hard hit. Sales in the world’s biggest auto market are on track to fall for the first time since at least 1990.

“Last December we saw overall China carmakers’ capacity utilisation rate at around 56 percent, but now we estimate it is roughly 50 percent,” Shanghai-based senior analyst Alan Kang at LMC Automotive told Reuters. “Carmakers in general are cutting production.”

China’s stock market tumbled about 25 percent in 2018, while the yuan has lost around 5 percent versus the dollar.

There are also signs China’s booming e-commerce may have started to moderate, with the country’s express delivery sector seeing slightly slower revenue growth towards year-end.

The courier sector raked in 542.88 billion yuan ($79 billion) in revenue from January-November, up 22.3 percent from a year earlier, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Monday, citing the State Post Bureau (SPB).

That was slower than 23.5 percent growth in the first 10 months, and less than the 24.7 percent clip for all of 2017.

Beijing says China is still on track to hit its growth target of around 6.5 percent, down from 6.9 percent in 2017, but the economy is expected to lose a few more steps next year.

The World Bank predicts growth will slow to 6.2 percent in 2019, still robust by global standards but the weakest expansion in nearly 30 years.

Almost blind former boxer helps troubled kids to win the combat of life

In some ways, says Portuguese ex-boxer Jorge Pina, the loss of most of his sight was the making of him. “I didn’t lose my sight, I just see things differently,” he says.

Forced to abandon his world title dreams, Pina devotes his time to helping troubled kids from rough neighborhoods stay on the right path by channeling their energy into sport.

“Before, I was a selfish and troubled person from a difficult neighborhood,” he says. “But now I want to help young people, win the combat of life.”

His sight problem developed in training in 2004 and eventually put an end to his boxing career. An operation two years later failed to fix his detached retina and he was left with only 10-percent vision.

But even before he had fully recovered, Pina was asking his doctor whether he could run.

“When I lost my sight I needed something positive, despite my limitations,” he said, still breathing hard from a training run with his sighted guide on a Lisbon athletics track.

“I chose what I was best at: running and sharing,” he said.

The running has already taken him to three Paralympics and he is also aiming to be at Tokyo in 2020.

The sharing saw him set up shop in Bensaude, one of Lisbon’s more deprived neighborhoods, where he operates his own sport association for local kids.

Jorge taught me discipline

In a spartan hall, the former middleweight contender warms up, shadow-boxing in front of a full-length mirror before calling the assembled kids to order.

“Listen up kids, right now — or I’m off!” he growls.

Tall, lean and muscled, 42-year-old Pina still cuts an imposing figure, and the kids, mostly from the local gypsy community, quieten down and listen.

Wherever he goes, the kids attach themselves to him, whether they are taking his hand to guide him or just giving him a hug.

“Jorge taught me discipline and how to channel my energy,” says one regular, 13-year-old Xavier Pereira, after sessions on the punch bag and some pad work.

“Before I met him I got into trouble at school and I didn’t go there very often,” he admits.

Pina has been running such sessions since 2011, also working with autistic kids.

“Jorge coming here really helped us,” says senior social worker Vanessa Madeira. “Our kids learn values and how to live as a community, and that builds trust with the parents.”

And the success of his work has convinced the city authorities to back a new base for his association with 60 percent of the funding.

The new Jorge Pina Association building will provide 1,700 square metres of space for sport and local community activities.

The strength to surpass myself

Partly to help raise the rest of the money for the centre, Pina keeps up his running, with the help of his sighted running partner Helio Fumo.

But he also has to stay in shape for the next Paralympics, to make sure he can make the qualifying times. And for that, he is up early every morning for his training run.

His apartment bears witness to his dedication: the trophies on the shelves; the energy drinks, food supplements, fruit and cereal bars fuelling his next sporting challenge.

Much of what he does today is also informed by his Christian faith.

And backing him every step of the way for the last 10 years is his partner, Raquel Pedro. She makes sure he has everything he needs to pursue his dreams.

At 42, Pina still feels in top physical form and even speaks in terms of the rebirth of his sporting career.

“As a boxer, I saw other people as enemies. Today, I am my own adversary and those who surround me give me the strength to surpass myself.

“I’m happier than I was before.”

Brexit sends Britons seeking Irish passports up 22 percent in 2018

DUBLIN: The number of British citizens applying for Irish passports rose by 22 percent in 2018, Ireland’s foreign office said on Monday, more than doubling the total of annual applications since Britain voted to leave the European Union.

Almost 100,000 eligible Britons sought to hang onto their EU citizenship via a passport from their nearest neighbor this year, up from 81,000 last year and 46,000 in 2015, the year before the Brexit vote led to a sharp rise in applications.

Anybody born in the Irish Republic or Northern Ireland, or with an Irish parent or grandparent, is entitled to an Irish passport – a total of about 6 million British citizens. They are able to hold dual citizenship.

Registrations for Irish passports in Northern Ireland, whose citizens can hold both an Irish and British passport as the province is part of the United Kingdom, rose by 2 percent in the year to the end of December.

With three months left until the UK is due to leave the EU on March 29, the draft divorce deal reached between both sides is floundering ahead of a planned vote in the British parliament next month, opening up a range of possibilities from a Brexit without a trade deal to calling it off entirely.

Nawaz acquitted on ‘benefit of doubt’ in Flagship reference: detailed verdict

ISLAMABAD: The accountability court has issued a detailed verdict in the Flagship Investment corruption reference, according to which former premier Nawaz Sharif was acquitted on the basis of ‘benefit of doubt’.

According to the verdict released today, there were not enough evidences in the case to convict the supreme leader of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz.

Sources informed that the verdict, which is 69-pager, notes that the documents presented by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) were also incomplete.

The NAB on Dec 24 decided to challenge Nawaz Sharif’s acquittal in Flagship corruption reference.

Already disqualified for holding public office, Nawaz Sharif was acquitted of all charges in the Flagship Investment case owing to lack of evidences, thus he has been acquitted, the short verdict of the accountability court read.

On December 24, an accountability court announced the verdict in two National Accountability Bureau’s references namely Al-Azizia Steel Mill and Flagship Investment and punished Nawaz to seven years in prison and ordered him to pay $25million and Rs1.5 billion as fine. However, he was acquitted of all charges in the Flagship Investment case.

As per sources, the legal team of the PML-N leader is also gearing up to challenge the verdict of Al-Azizia reference against Nawaz.

Young girl’s tragic story makes her symbol of Yemen war

Buthaina Mansur al-Rimi’s life has changed drastically since last year — orphaned in Sanaa, the little girl controversially ended up in Saudi Arabia for medical care and has just returned to Yemen’s capital.

Her entire immediate family was wiped out in an air strike by a Saudi-led coalition that backs Yemen’s government, using an explosive device Amnesty International says was made in the US.

Images of Buthaina’s rescue and a picture of her swollen and bruised at a hospital trying to force open one of her eyes with her fingers were beamed worldwide.

That international fame saw her become something of a propaganda pawn in the war between Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels and Saudi media.

“I was in my mother’s room with my father, sisters, brother and uncle, the first missile hit, and my father went to get us sugar to get over the shock, but then the second missile hit, and then the third,” she says.

“And then the house fell,” adds the little girl, who says she is eight.

It was the night of August 25, 2017.

The uncle who died was her “favorite”, she says.

Along with her family, eight other civilians — including two children — were killed in a house nearby.

A few days later, the picture of Buthaina attempting to force open her right eye went viral.

The Saudi-led alliance admitted responsibility for the air strike describing it as a “technical mistake”.

But it drew strong international condemnation.

In the week ahead of that strike, 42 people were killed in other air strikes, according to the UN.

A month after her close family was wiped out, pictures of Buthaina appeared in Saudi media showing her being treated in Riyadh.

The circumstances surrounding her move from Sanaa to the Saudi capital remain unclear.

The Huthi rebels say Buthaina, her uncle Ali and his family were “kidnapped” by the coalition and taken to government-held Aden, before travelling on wards to Riyadh.

Saudi media said she was brought to the Saudi capital at the request of the internationally-recognized Yemeni government.

The Huthis’ Al-Masirah media outlet has published stories welcoming them back from the “grasps of Saudi Arabia”.

Mahdi Al-Mshat, head of the rebels’ Higher Political Council, has ordered Buthaina and her remaining family be offered a home and salary, according to the rebels’ Saba news agency.

She doesn’t forget

Buthaina says she is looking forward to going to school for the first time.

Looking healthy, she sits on the floor of her uncle’s home in Sanaa.

She plays alongside her cousins with a doll, braiding its hair.

“I want to go to school and become a doctor,” she tells AFP, her own hair tied in a ponytail.

“I want the war to stop and for us to live in peace… for the children of Yemen to live in peace,” she says.

Both the Huthis and the Saudi-led coalition stand accused by a UN panel of experts of acts that could amount to war crimes.

Buthaina’s return to her home city comes amid a ceasefire agreement in the lifeline port city of Hodeida — part of a peace push seen as the best chance yet of ending four years of devastating conflict.

It has been a long journey back home for the little girl, who became a symbol of Yemen’s war.

Ali says that she still struggles with the loss of her family.

“She doesn’t forget her mum and dad. She feels sad when she sees things that remind her of her parents or siblings… or when she hears the songs her father used to listen to,” he says.

“We tell her to hold on and that they are in heaven… and heaven is a beautiful place.

Ali says that Buthaina is his “flesh and blood” and considers her a daughter.

Holding back tears, he says: “When their house collapsed, I asked God not to deny me from seeing my brother again, but it’s ok. Thanks to him, Buthaina stayed with us.”

Yemen’s war has killed nearly 10,000 people, including 2,200 children, according to the World Health Organization, but other groups say the toll is far higher.

NASA spaceship zooms toward farthest world ever photographed

A NASA spaceship is zooming toward the farthest, and quite possibly the oldest, cosmic body ever photographed by humankind, a tiny, distant world called Ultima Thule some four billion miles (6.4 billion kilometers) away.

The US space agency will ring in the New Year with a live online broadcast to mark historic flyby of the mysterious object in a dark and frigid region of space known as the Kuiper Belt at 12:33 am January 1 (0533 GMT Tuesday).

Real-time video of the actual flyby is impossible, since it takes more six hours for a signal sent from Earth to reach the spaceship, named New Horizons, and another six hours for the response to arrive.

But if all goes well, the first images should be in hand by the end of New Year’s Day.

What does it look like?

Scientists are not sure what Ultima Thule (pronounced TOO-lee) looks like — whether it is round or oblong or even if it is a single object or a cluster.

It was discovered in 2014 with the help of the Hubble Space Telescope, and is believed to be 12-20 miles (20-30 kilometers) in size.

Scientists decided to study it with New Horizons after the spaceship, which launched in 2006, completed its main mission of flying by Pluto in 2015, returning the most detailed images ever taken of the dwarf planet.

“At closest approach we are going to try to image Ultima at three times the resolution we had for Pluto,” said Stern.

“If we can accomplish that it will be spectacular.”

Hurtling through space at a speed of 32,000 miles (51,500 kilometers) per hour, the spacecraft aims to make its closest approach within 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) of the surface of Ultima Thule.

The flyby will be fast, at a speed of nine miles (14 kilometers) per second.

Seven instruments on board will record high-resolution images and gather data about its size and composition.

Ultima Thule is named for a mythical, far-northern island in medieval literature and cartography, according to NASA.

“Ultima Thule means ‘beyond Thule’ — beyond the borders of the known world — symbolizing the exploration of the distant Kuiper Belt and Kuiper Belt objects that New Horizons is performing, something never before done,” the US space agency said in a statement.

According to project scientist Hal Weaver of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, mankind didn’t even know the Kuiper Belt — a vast ring of relics from the formation days of the solar system — existed until the 1990s.

“This is the frontier of planetary science,” said Weaver.

“We finally have reached the outskirts of the solar system, these things that have been there since the beginning and have hardly changed — we think. We will find out.”

Despite the partial US government shutdown, sparked by a feud over funding for a border wall with Mexico between President Donald Trump and opposition Democrats, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine vowed that the US space agency would broadcast the flyby.

Normally, NASA TV and NASA’s website would go dark during a government shutdown.

NASA will also provide updates about another spacecraft, called OSIRIS-REx, that will enter orbit around the asteroid Bennu on New Year’s Eve, Bridenstine said.

Death toll in Magnitogorsk building collapse rises to 3: Deputy Governor

Death toll in Magnitogorsk building collapse rises to 3: Deputy Governor

Chelyabinsk [Russia]: The death toll in the Magnitogorsk building collapse, presumably due to a natural gas blast, increased to three as the fate of 79 people is unknown, Chelyabinsk Region’s deputy Governor told reporters on Monday.

“Three alive and three dead people were taken from under the debris. The fate of 79 people is incomprehensible,” Oleg Klimov told reporters.
All those killed were adults, Klimov said, adding that three injured, including one child, were taken to the hospital.

The official also noted that the explosion apparently occurred on the second floor above the arc.
Furthermore, a criminal probe has been opened into the blast, according to Svetlana Petrenko, the Spokeswoman of the Investigative Committee.

“A criminal investigation has been opened on suspicion of a crime under Section 3 Article 109 of the Russian Criminal Code (manslaughter of two or more people),” she said. Investigators are currently on the scene.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Chelyabinsk, Boris Dubrovsky, told a local television channel that authorities were considering buying housing for the affected families. People who have been left homeless by the blast in biting cold have been brought to shelters.

According to preliminary information, at around 6 am (local time), a suspected natural gas blast hit the 10-storey building in Magnitogorsk here, damaging 48 apartments. The Russian Emergencies Ministry earlier reported that at least two people had been killed and ten others had been pulled out from the debris.

Bangladesh PM wins new term in vote marred by violence

Bangladesh PM wins new term in vote marred by violence

Dhaka: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has won a new term with a landslide victory, the country’s Election Commission said on Monday, in an election marred by deadly violence and allegations of widespread rigging.

Hasina’s ruling Awami League (AL) party won a landslide of 288 votes out of the 300 parliamentary seats contested in the Sunday election, surpassing its previous election wins and making her the Prime Minister for an unprecedented fourth term.

The opposition alliance led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of jailed former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia took just seven seats and condemned the vote as “farcical” marred by violence, intimidation and vote rigging claims, bdnews24.com reported.

Bangladesh’s Parliament has 350 seats in total, 50 of which are reserved for women and allotted proportional to the overall vote.

The BNP’s Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called it “a cruel joke with the nation” and said that the party’s decision to stay away from the general election five years ago was not wrong.

“The so-called participatory election has caused long-term damage to the nation,” he said, adding, that “many think that the BNP was wrong not to join the 2014 election. Today’s election has proved that it was not a wrong decision at all.”

There were claims of “irregularities” in 221 of the 300 seats being contested.

The opposition Jatiya Oikya Front also rejected the vote and demanded a fresh election, accusing the AL of stuffing ballot boxes. “We urge the Election Commission to void this farcical result immediately,” the alliance’s chief Kamal Hossain said.

“We are demanding that a fresh election is held under a neutral government as early as possible.”

Hasina’s government has also been accused of human rights abuses during the election. At least 17 people have been killed in clashes between ruling party supporters and the opposition on Sunday.

The military was deployed across the country to try to prevent the violence seen during the polls, which were tarnished by a low turnout and boycotted by the largest opposition group and its allies.

The Awami League, led by Hasina, has been in power since 2009 and won the last election in January 2014 with a resounding majority amid a boycott. But Hasina has since been accused of authoritarianism and harassment of the media and opposition figures, even as she presides over strong economic growth.

Human Rights Watch South Asia Director Meenakshi Ganguly said on Twitter that “with serious allegations of voter intimidation, restrictions on opposition polling agents and several candidates seeking a re-poll, there are concerns about the credibility” of the election.

At least 47 candidates from the main opposition alliance withdrew before polling closed, alleging vote rigging and intimidation.

Activists, observers and the opposition party had warned that the vote would not be fair, but the governing party accused the opposition of peddling false claims.

Must win 16 LS seats to dictate terms: KTR

Must win 16 LS seats to dictate terms: KTR

Hyderabad: Stressing the need for voter enrolment, TRS working president KT Rama Rao today asserted that the party cadre should strive for winning 16 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls.

Addressing party workers at Kukatpally and Secunderabad, the TRS working president appealed them to see that the people enroll in the electoral list as lack of names and non availability led the TRS to lose some more votes in the recently held Assembly elections. Had all the eligible got voting chance, the TRS would have got better majority of votes, he felt. “Let us dictate terms at national level and not to beg by winning 16 MP seats. Take initiative to drive people and youth to enroll in the voter list and get more votes to the ruling party at the hustings”, KTR asked division level leaders.

KTR also said a special drive of voter enrolment has begun on December 26 to January 24 and the people are in favour of the ruling party. “We have already disbursed 12,000 voter enrolment forms in all segments and avoid missing or loss of votes as that will lead the TRS to lose the same. He also said TRS supremo K Chandrashekhar Rao is vouching for federal front to unite all the regional parties to form an alternative at the national level.

KTR said the BJP lost 103 seats in the Assembly polls in Telangana despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah, 11 Union ministers and some Chief Ministers campaigned, he said. The BJP may get 150 seats and the Congress may not get beyond 100 seats in the future Lok Sabha elections and the Federal Front is likely to win the polls. While the Odisha and Chattisgarh States were following the Rythu Bandhu scheme of Telangana, the Narendra Modi Government was also planning to make some changes and implement it across the nation, he claimed.

Stating that farmers’ problems will be in national agenda of Federal Front, KTR said Telangana will have to show direction to the country. “Let us win 16 MP seats to dictate terms to Delhi bigwigs at the Centre and address the issues. “I dedicate TRS victory to the activists and people for 47 per cent of votes, giving 75 per cent seats out of 119 in the recent polls.” He also promised to make efforts to keep all the assurances made.

Ceasefire violated in Syria’s de-escalation zone: Russia

Moscow: Russia has claimed that the ceasefire in Syria’s de-escalation zone of Idlib has been violated by terrorist outfits.

Furthermore, the statement also outlined that a Syrian serviceman had been killed due to a militant attack on Kirmil settlement.

The multi-sided armed conflict in Syria has been raging since 2011, with Russia, Turkey and Iran being the guarantors of the ceasefire regime. Earlier, the US had announced its decision to pull troops out from the region, with US President Donald Trump citing the defeat of ISIS as one of the main reasons.

His claim has since been refuted by numerous quarters, including senior Republican Senators like Lindsey Graham.

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday hit out at the Congress, accusing it of “killing” the CBI in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh-Tulsiram Prajapati and Kausar Bi’s alleged encounter killing case.

He also said the principal Opposition party, which has been raising concerns over institutional independence, needs “serious introspection”.

“This is an irrefutable evidence of what the Congress did to our investigative agencies. Those who have recently shown a belated concern for institutional independence should seriously introspect as to what they did to the CBI when they were in power,” Jaitley said in a Facebook post.

He was referring to the judgement delivered by special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in the politically sensitive Sohrabuddin Sheikh-Tulsiram Prajapati and Kausar Bi’s alleged encounter killings case.

The court acquitted all the 22 accused saying “witnesses and proofs provided were not satisfactory”.

The court also said it was targeted “to act upon a script” and “anyhow implicate political leaders”.

Jaitley slammed Congress President Rahul Gandhi for his veiled dig at the Narendra Modi-led Central government over judicial verdicts in the case, saying “no one killed…they just died”.

“The Congress President on the day of the judgement raised the issue ‘that nobody killed Sohrabudin’. It would have been more appropriate if he had asked the right question, namely who killed Sohrabudin case investigation, he would have got the right answer,” he said.

He said the Special CBI Judge, Mumbai, who deals with CBI cases has acquitted all the accused in the Sohrabudin case.

“More relevant than the order of the acquittal is the observation of the judge that in the investigation, from the very beginning, the investigating agency did not investigate the case professionally in order to find out the truth but to divert it towards certain political persons,” he said.

The senior BJP leader also shared a letter written to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on September 27, 2013 as the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha about the alleged politicisation of the investigation in the Sohrabudin, Tulsi Prajapati, Ishrat Jahan, Rajinder Rathore and Haren Pandya cases.

“Every word of what I have said in the letter, over the next five years, have proven to be true,” he said.

Special CBI Judge S.J. Sharma in a strong indictment of the CBI had said that the entire investigation was targeted to act upon a script to achieve the said goal and in the process of its zeal to anyhow implicate political leaders.

“It clearly appears that the CBI was more concerned in establishing a particular preconceived and premeditated theory, rather than finding out the truth,” said Special Judge Sharma.

Opposition in RS wants select committee to oversee triple talaq bill

Opposition in RS wants select committee to oversee triple talaq bill

New Delhi: Ahead of the Central government’s move to move the triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha, the Opposition parties on Monday held a meeting and decided to demand that the bill be referred to the select committee for further deliberations.

The meeting, chaired by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad in his parliament house chamber, was attended among others by leaders of 12 opposition parties including Samajwadi Party’s Ram Gopal Yadav, TMC’s Derek O’Brien, CPI’s D. Raja and Kerala Congress’ Jose K. Mani.

Sources present in the meeting said that most of the parties present in the meeting were of the view that the bill needs to be sent to the select committee.

DMK leader and Rajya Sabha member, K. Kanimozhi said her party had been consistent in its position against “criminalisation” of triple talaq.

“We are opposing jail punishment for pronouncing talaq. Even the Islamic tenets do not allow instant triple talaq. We will vote against the bill and it is the stand of the DMK that it (bill) be referred to a select committee,” she told reporters.

TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu made an appeal to all his MPs to obstruct the harassment of Muslims.

“All Opposition parties should fight unitedly against the anti-Muslim attitude of BJP. The government forcibly imposing triple talaq bill is a danger for secularism and national integrity,” he said.

Keen on enacting the legislation, the government has got the bill on criminalising triple talaq listed in the Rajya Sabha for consideration on Monday, giving it the top priority notwithstanding the fact that it may find it difficult to get the bill through.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 has been listed as the number one item under the head legislative business in the Upper House where the opposition has greater numbers, given the fact that BJP’s friendly party, AIADMK, has also opposed the legislation.

The Lok Sabha has passed the bill although Congress and other opposition parties and AIADMK walked out of the House before the bill was put to vote as the government had rejected the demand for referring it to a joint select committee.

Besides Congress, the AIADMK, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have also opposed the bill in the lower house.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also chaired a meeting with top party leaders in the parliament house which was attended by BJP President Amit Shah, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have issued whips to their Rajya Sabha members.

In the absence of majority in the Upper House, the BJP is likely to face difficulties in getting the bill passed.

TRUE BEAUTY OF THE BELIEVERS – II

TRUE BEAUTY OF THE BELIEVERS – II

Allah The Almighty Says (what means):

• {And is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him light by which to walk among the people like one who is in darkness, never to emerge therefrom? Thus it has been made pleasing to the disbelievers that which they were doing.}[Quran 6:122]

• {O you who have believed, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger; He will [then] give you a double portion of His mercy and make for you a light by which you will walk and forgive you; and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.} [Quran 57:28] (The light of faith and piety)

In a Hadeeth (narration) on the authority of Ibn ‘Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, he said that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  said:“Allah The Almighty created His creation in darkness then threw on them some of His light. The one who had then a share of this light is guided and the one who did not will go astray.” [Saheeh] [Ahmad, At-Tirmithi and Al-Haakim]

It is a divine light that expands the heart, reassures the soul, and lights the way of guidance for the believer in a way that enables him to differentiate between truth and falsehood. This light protects the believer and prevents him from committing sins, leads him to good deeds and prohibits him from committing immorality and wrongdoing. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {So is one whose breast Allah has expanded to [accept] Islam and he is upon a light from his Lord [like one whose heart rejects it]? Then woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the Remembrance of Allah. Those are in manifest error.} [Quran 39:22]

In fact, there is a great difference between people who waste their days and nights without attaining any reward and others who use their time in worship, which no matter how great it is, would be little when compared to the Right of Allah The Almighty over them. Allah The Almighty praises those people by Saying (what means):

• {Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs, accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good. They used to sleep but little of the night, And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness, And from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.} [Quran 51:15-19]

• {They arise from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend. And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.}[Quran 32:16-17]

In a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Sa‘eed, may Allah be pleased with him, he said that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  said: “The one who reads Surat Al-Kahf on Friday, will have light up to the following Friday.” [Saheeh] [Al-Haakim and Al-Bayhaqi]

In a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Sa‘eed, may Allah be pleased with him, he said that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  said: “The one who reads Surat Al-Kahf on Friday, will have light that fills the distance between him and Al-Bayt Al-‘Ateeq (the Ka‘bah).”[Saheeh] [Al-Bayhaqi] (The light of the Quran)

In a Hadeeth on the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, he said that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  said:“Gray hair (which results from old age) is the light of the believer. Every single gray hair that one has while being a Muslim will gain him a reward and will cause him to be elevated one degree.” [Al-Bayhaqi]

Fadhaalah ibn ‘Ubayd, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  said: “Gray hair (that results from old age) is light in the face. So, whoever wants, let him pluck his own light.” [Ibn ‘Adiyy and Al-Bayhaqi] (The light of old age)

Among things that help one attain spiritual beauty are:

• Following the Sunnah (tradition) of the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) regarding repentance, supplication, Ruqyah (healing with the Quran) and other rulings.

Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him. Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, “Our Lord, perfect for us our light and forgive us. Indeed, You are over all things competent.”} [Quran 66:8]

The Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  used to supplicate Allah The Almighty saying: “Allahumma Zayyin-na bizeenat Al-Eemaan wa ij‘alna Hudaatan Muhtadeen (O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of faith and make us those who guide and are guided).” [Saheeh] [An-Nasaa’i and Al-Haakim on the authority of ‘Ammaar ibn Yaasir, may Allah be pleased with him]

As for Ruqyah (healing with the Quran), it was narrated on the authority of Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  saw a maid that had a black part on her face, and said: “Make Ruqyah for her as she is afflicted by an evil eye.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Nowadays, we see this on the faces of many Muslim women, especially at times of pregnancy or because of being exposed to direct sun rays. If these Muslim women had followed the Sunnah of the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  it would have been better for them than using ointments or bleach that harms the skin.

• Good morals, gentleness, and bashfulness are also included in spiritual beauty.

‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  said: “Adhere to leniency. Leniency adorns whatever includes it and disgraces whatever is void of it.”[Saheeh] [Muslim on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her]

In a Hadeeth on the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, he said that the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention )  said: “Obscenity is not to be found in any thing but that it disgraces it and bashfulness is not to be found in any thing but it adorns it.” [Saheeh] [Ahmad, Al-Bukhari and At-Tirmithi]

• Perfect compliance with Sharee‘ah as it is beneficial in its smallest parts.

Muslims should avoid any parties who change the religion according to their own fancies. They modify the Hadeeths so that they achieve their goals. Some of them made the impermissible exposure of women’s beauty lawful, while others satisfied the corrupt people and removed Hijab along with the chastity and purity that it represents. Consequently, women started to go out dressed but appearing naked, inclined (to evil) and making others incline towards it.

These people say that Allah The Almighty is Beautiful and loves beauty, but they disregard the dire consequences of an evil end. Why do not they consider the divine Call of Allah The Almighty as He Says (what means): {O children of Aadam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We Have Made the devils allies to those who do not believe.} [Quran 7:27]

In fact, the appearance of the believing women who are adherent to their religion and the Sunnah of the Prophet  sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) indicates their faith and the effect of faith appears on their body, especially the face. Believing women beautify themselves by chastity and virtue; avoid doubtful matters and vice; understand their underlying harms and thus, they behave rationally, and beautify themselves moderately.

I am also an Accidental Prime Minister: quips Deve Gowda

I am also an Accidental Prime Minister: quips Deve Gowda

New Delhi: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who served as prime minister from June 1, 1996, to April 21, 1997, with the help of regional parties and Congress said on Friday that he too was an “Accidental Prime Minister”. His quip came amid a political row over the movie with the same title.

The film is based on the tenure of Manmohan Singh as India’s prime minister from 2004 to 2014. However, Congress alleged that it was the BJP’s propaganda against their party. The trailer of the film was released in Mumbai on Thursday.

Answering to a question over the controversy on the film ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, the 85-year-old JDS supremo is quoted by Indian Express to have said in a lighter vein “Actually I don’t know, why that was allowed…I think it started three or four months ago. I don’t know who has permitted, why? Honestly, I have not gone through this so-called Accidental Prime Minister. I’m also (an) Accidental Prime Minister.”

After serving as prime minister from June 1, 1996, to April 21, 1997, Gowda had to step down when Congress withdrew support.

The film Accidental Prime Minister is directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte. It stars Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh and Akshaye Khanna as Baru. It is scheduled to release on January 11.

Congress sees conspiracy by KCR in cut in BC quota

Congress sees conspiracy by KCR in cut in BC quota

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Chief Spokesperson Dr. Dasoju Sravan has dismissed the version of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao over reduction in quota for Backward Classes in Panchayat Raj elections.

Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday, Sravan said that the Chief Minister not only defended cut in reservation percentage for BCs but also tried to divert people’s attention to other topics by targetting opposition leaders in the most inappropriate language. “KCR must realise that he is not the Chief Minister only for TRS. He is the Chief Minister for 4 crore people of Telangana. Therefore, he must learn to speak in a decent and balanced manner. His cheap talk by calling Congress leaders ‘bevaqoof’ or ‘idiots’ does not suit the stature of a man who is sitting on the CM’s chair. KCR has brought utter shame and disrespect only to his position, but to the entire State of Telangana,” he said.

He said KCR was like his father and he won’t mind if he uses harsh language against him. However, he said he would tolerate if KCR tries to divert the real issues.

Sravan said KCR’s attack on Congress leaders and defence of cut in quota for BCs in Panchayat Raj polls was nothing but a major conspiracy to disempower the Backward Classes politically by reducing their representation in local bodies. He attributing motives he wants to prevent everyone from going to court to seek justice and by indulging in cheap talk, he wants to stop Congress leaders from taking up public issues. “Its war to get justice for BCs and we will not fall into the KCR’s trap,” he said.

He said KCR apparently expects everyone, including the opposition parties, to accept all his decisions without raising any questions. KCR could not suppress BCs with his arrogant talk and misrepresentation of facts, he said.

Sravan said KCR’s accusation that Congress was trying to stop Panchayat Raj elections was only a figment of his imagination. He said Congress never approached the court to stop an election. However, it went to the court seeking adequate representation for the BCs in PR polls. Showing the open letters that he wrote to the Chief Minister on the issue, he said it was on 9th June, 2018, he had questioned only 33% reservation for BCs while they constitute 52% of total population as per the Intensive Household Survey held in August 2014. After getting no response to the first letter, he said he wrote another letter on 14th June to Commissioner and Principal Secretary of Panchayat Raj and also the Election Commission. They too did not respond on the issue. Finally, on 17-06-2018, Ravindranath of Yadadri Bhongiri District filed Writ Petition No. 20477 in the High Court.

Acting on the petition, the Congress leader said that High Court directed the State Government to conduct caste-wise enumeration of BCs in Telangana before holding the PR polls. He said Karnataka has already done categorisation of BCs and therefore, it can also be done in Telangana. However, he said TRS Government simply ignored the HC directives and did not act on its directions for the last six months.

Sravan pointed out that it were the TRS leaders who tried to stop the Panchayat Raj elections and not the Congress party. He said Nagarkurnool MPTC Gopal Reddy, who is a close associate of TRS MLA from Nagarkurnool Marri Janardhan Reddy, who filed a petition No. 21651/2018 in the court demanding that reservation in PR elections should not cross 50% ceiling. He said he would send a copy of the petition to the Chief Minister if he was not having that information. He said that the TRS Government did not even file the counter in this case as it wanted BC quota to be slashed. He said it was a matter of shame that the Chief Minister himself is indulging in falsehood and only to prevent political empowerment of BCs, KCR wants to hold elections without having categorisation and without giving them reservation in proportionate to their population.

The Congress leaders also ridiculed KCR’s claims on measures taken by his government for BC welfare. He said that the TRS Government did not spend promised Rs. 25,000 Crore on BC welfare. Further, he said nothing was done to introduce a BC Sub-Plan. He said BCs were not given any importance and were suppressed everywhere. He pointed out despite having a population of 52% in the State, there were only 25 BC MLAs out of 119 members. He said now conspiracies were being hatched to crush them in the local bodies.
