Avenfield reference: Defence lawyer cross-examines Wajid Zia

ISLAMABAD: The accountability court hearing references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members resumed hearing the Avenfield properties case on Friday (today).

Judge Muhammad Bashir hearing the Avenfield case in capital city Islamabad.

Former premier Nawaz Sharif, daughter Mariam Nawaz and his son in law Capt. Safdar appeared in the court for hearing as defence lawyer Khawaja Haris cross examining the prosecution witness Wajid Zia.
Wajid Zia, head of the Panama case joint investigation team (JIT), which probed the Sharif family assets last year, being cross-examined by Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Haris after he completed recording his statement over several weeks.

In response to Haris’ query, Zia said the JIT had decided to contact Jerry Freeman through a solicitor based in the UK. He said the JIT had sent the questionnaire to Freeman with mutual consensus. Jerry Freemen confirmed that Hassan Nawaz had signed two trust deeds on January 2, 2006. Freeman has been a witness of signing on the trust deed.

The prosecurity witness said that the copies of the trust deed are present at the office of Jerry Freeman.

Sharif’s counsel asked if Freeman was asked to bring the evidence to Pakistan? He was not asked for it, the witness said.

Sindh govt declares public holiday on April 4

KARACHI: The Sindh government has issued a notification declaring April 4 as a public holiday across the province to mark the death anniversary of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

Sindh holiday Karachi

“The government of Sindh has been pleased to declare April 4, 2018 as Public Holiday throughout the province of Sindh on the occassion of the 39th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto,” the notification reads.

Zulfikar Bhutto – a profile:

Zulfikar Bhutto was born in Larkana on 5th January 1928 to Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto and Khursheed Begum. Bhutto’s family was influential landlords who decided to secede their territory and lands with Pakistan, at the time of partition. In 1947, he joined the University of Southern California, and later the University of California at Berkeley in June 1949. After completing his degree with honors in Political Science at Berkeley in June 1950, he was admitted to Oxford.

Initially after joining Iskander Mirza’s government as Commerce Minister and the youngest member of Ayub Khan’s cabinet, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto rose in prominence as a young, intelligent, firebrand politician and took over the coveted portfolio of Foreign Minister from Mohommad Ali Bogra in 1963. As Foreign Minister, Bhutto worked wonders for Pakistan and revamped Pakistan’s relations with several countries. He persuaded Ayub Khan to to establish close, brotherly relations with neighboring China, a relationship due to which Pakistan benefits even to this day.

Zulfikar Bhutto death anniversary

Pakistan’s 1965 war with India was to have a huge impact on Bhutto’s legacy and political career. An invasion which the Pakistan Army had fended off well on ground, was lost at the table during the Tashklent declaration. Bhutto was upset with Ayub Khan and the two harbored differences. Ultimately, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto resigned as Foreign Minister in 1966 and established Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in 1967.

After forming PPP, Bhutto launched an organized and disciplined protest against military dictator Ayub Khan. The boastful, charismatic and fiery speeches by Bhutto drew in large crowds and people began to connect with Bhutto. Ayub was losing power and influence as thousands flocked to hear Zulfiqar’s protest speeches and blameworthy anecdotes of Tashkent declaration. After immense pressure and political opposition, Gen.Ayub Khan was forced to hang his boots and announce his resignation on March 25, 1969. He handed over power to Gen.Yahya Khan, who oversaw the famous ‘one man, one vote’ election of 1970.

Bhutto became the Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1971 and assumed charge of the dismal state of affairs in Pakistan. It was a demoralized country he had to administrate and a weakened, war-torn economy he inherited. However, his active personality and clever tactics helped Pakistan emerge out of an impending crisis. Bhutto was also the pioneer of Pakistan’s nuclear program and was also dubbed during those days as the ‘Father of the Islamic bomb’. Bhutto reigned in Dr.Abdul Qadeer Khan and tasked him to equip Pakistan with a nuclear weapon. His famous words are still fondly recollected by people which were,”We will eat grass but build the bomb”. Bhutto successfully and with immense political acumen, secured the release of 90,000 Pakistan Army prisoners of War during the Simla Agreement in 1971.

In 1977, the Pakistan National Alliance (PNA), a group of political parties emerged to rally against Bhutto, took to the streets. Bhutto dealt firmly with journalists, activists and political prisoners through his armed force FSF (Federal Security Force). As tensions mounted and protests continued, Army Chief Zia-ul-Haq imposed Martial Law and overthrew Bhutto’s government. Bhutto was charged with the murder of a political rival Nawab Mohammed Ahmed Qasuri and a trial took place. Bhutto was handed out to a death sentence after a hostile trial had been conducted by kangaroo courts, under then president Zia-ul-Haq.

Amid petitions and appeals of clemency, mercy from several Heads of States, Bhutto was hanged on April 4, 1979. His death shattered the nation’s morale and was symbolic of the suppression of democracy. With his death, the needy lost their leader; the destitute lost their representative.

Ambassador Alice G. Wells, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs called on the Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.

According to Foreign Office, this is Ambassador Wells second visit to Pakistan this year aimed at continuing the conversation to strengthen bilateral relations and promote peace & security in the region.

“Pakistan and the US reiterate their firm commitment to act against all militants that sabotage peace efforts between Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

Foreign Secretary also apprised the visiting delegation of the continued ceasefire violations by India that undermined stability of the region.

Pakistan’s position that a comprehensive dialogue was the only way forward for civilized nations to resolve outstanding issues was reiterated.

She held discussions with Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and later with Pakistan’s National Security Adviser Nasser Khan Janjua.

During the meeting at Pakistan Foreign Ministry, Wells and Janjua reviewed bilateral relations and discussed regional issues, particularly Afghanistan.

The Foreign Office statement said both sides agreed that the momentum of the peace initiative unveiled in Kabul by President Ashraf Ghani, and followed up in Tashkent, needs to be carried forward.

Mechanisms for return of refugees and strengthening border management were also discussed.

Noting that the US and Pakistan had a long track record of cooperation, Wells emphasized the importance of working together to achieve the common objectives of peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.

Later, Wells discussed bilateral relations and the situation in Afghanistan with the national security adviser.

The NSA stressed that Pakistan and the US had a common cause in seeking early closure to the decades-old conflict in Afghanistan.

“Nasser Janjua apprised Ambassador Wells about his recent visit to Kabul where he had in-depth, positive and constructive discussions with President Ashraf Ghani and other senior government officials,” the NSA office said.

Janjua once again welcomed President Ghani’s peace offer and termed it as a great opportunity to end a perpetual conflict. He called it as a “light at the other side of the tunnel”. The NSA said that Pakistan, with all the regional countries and the US, will support the new peace initiative.

“Wells agreed on the need to support President Ghani’s peace offer and to make efforts for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan through political reconciliation,” the statement said.

US policy on Afghanistan, Wells explained, was also meant to ultimately bring the insurgents to the peace table for negotiations on finding a peaceful and enduring solution.

The acting assistant secretary was accompanied by the US ambassador in Islamabad, David Hale.

‘Medication errors kill 0.5 million people in Pakistan every year’

Medication errors Pakistan

KARACHI: Medication errors including misspelled prescriptions, lookalike medicines and other mistakes committed by the healthcare providers are killing at least a half a million people in Pakistan every year, said experts.

Speaking at a reception hosted in the honour of eminent pharmacist and President of Pakistan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (PSHP) Abdul Latif Sheikh, who was awarded with the prestigious Donald E Francke Medal and Award, Sindh Health Secretary Dr Fazlullah Pechuho said that there were at least 50 pharmacists hired for the Civil Hospital Karachi alone by the government, but were not being consulted by the doctors and hospital management to utilise their expertise in saving patients’ lives.

Medication errors Pakistan

In his address, Mr. Sheikh said that as many as 500,000 people were annually killed in healthcare facilities in Pakistan due to medication errors but lives of these people could be saved by adopting the modern clinical pharmacy practices.

Dr Pechuho recalled an incident, saying: “A few months back, a German lady came to me at my office and complained that her husband was killed due to the medication error in the city. When we investigated the matter, it appeared that somebody gave anti-cancer medicine to her husband instead of anti-hypertension medicine because the packaging of both the medicines was similar. The German man could not understand English language and by consuming wrong medicine, he died,” Pechuho told participants.

He maintained that the government was trying to introduce clinical pharmacy services and practices at the public hospitals throughout the province and in this regard, consultation with pharmacy council, associations of pharmacists, the pharmaceutical industry and private sector would be started soon to achieve the important milestone in the health sector.

On the occasion, he suggested that the highest civil award of medicine and public service should be awarded to Mr. Sheikh for his service of ailing the humanity and people of Pakistan, and he vowed that the health department would recommend his name for the highest civil award in the country.

Lindsay Lohan fails to convince court her image is in Grand Theft Auto

Lindsay Lohan

NEW YORK: New York State’s highest court on Thursday rejected Lindsay Lohan’s appeal accusing the maker of “Grand Theft Auto V” of invading her privacy, concluding that video game characters that the actress said were based on her did not resemble her.

By a 6-0 vote, the state Court of Appeals called Take-Two Interactive Software Inc’s depictions “nothing more than cultural comment,” and said it owed Lohan no damages.

Lohan, 31, had objected to an alleged look- and sound-alike character, Lacey Jonas, who called herself “really famous” and an “actress slash singer” as she tried to hide from paparazzi.

She also objected to depiction of a blonde woman, shown in one image being frisked by a police officer, and in another taking a selfie with her cellphone and flashing a peace sign.

In Thursday’s decision, Judge Eugene Fahey said a computer image, or avatar, may constitute a “portrait” to support an invasion of privacy claim under New York civil rights law.

But he said Lohan could not prevail because “Grand Theft Auto V” merely depicted a generic “twenty something” woman, without any suggestion it was her.

“The amended complaint was properly dismissed because the artistic renderings are indistinct, satirical representations of the style, look, and persona of a modern, beach-going young woman that are not reasonably identifiable as plaintiff,” Fahey wrote.

In a separate order, the court dismissed similar claims against Take-Two by Karen Gravano, a star of the reality TV series “Mob Wives,” over another character.

Lohan’s movies include 1998’s “The Parent Trap” and 2004’s “Mean Girls,” but acting roles became harder to find following legal and other problems.

The “Grand Theft Auto” series has sold more than 275 million units.

The case is Lohan v Take-Two Interactive Software Inc, New York State Court of Appeals, No. 24.

West Indies announce T20 squad for Pakistan tour

CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, and President and Chief Executive Officer of West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), Wavell Hinds, will accompany the squad on the trip.

Commenting on the tour, CWI Chief Executive Officer Jonny Grave said: “Following the successful hosting of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in Karachi on the weekend, our squad are now en route to Pakistan for our three-match T20I series.

“This tour is a further major step for our friends at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to bring their cricket back home, and we are pleased that our players and support staff have recognised this and supported this venture.”

Grave added: “Independent security advisors, Eastern Star International (ESI) have confirmed to both CWI and WIPA that they are satisfied that the risk is manageable and can be mitigated to an acceptable level.

“We have made it very clear to the players and support staff that had personal reservations about this Tour that we fully understand and accept their position.”

Commenting on the selection of the squad, Chairman of the CWI Selection Panel Courtney Browne, said a few of the players identified for selection, including regular T20I captain Carlos Brathwaite, had opted out of this tour, due to security concerns, but feels their replacements have a great opportunity to push their claims for future selection.

“We had a few players that opted not to tour Pakistan, due to their or their families’ security concerns and CWI have fully accepted their position,” said Browne.

“This series, therefore, provides opportunities for new players to state their claim for a regular place in the team, plus gain vital experience in different conditions. We expect the series to be highly competitive.”

On the choice of Jason Mohammed as captain, Browne said: “Jason is our One-day International vice-captain, and he has been asked to step up and lead the team with the unavailability of Carlos. He has lots of captaincy experience at first-class level.”

There are four uncapped T20I players in the squad – two of whom have been picked for the first time in a senior international squad, plus two with previous international experience in other formats.

Batsman Andre McCarthy and Jamaica Scorpions teammate, fast bowler Odean Smith, a member of the 2016 WINDIES Under-19 ICC Youth World Cup-winning squad, are in a senior WINDIES squad for the first time.

Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul has played Tests and One-day Internationals, and Guyana Jaguars teammate, all-rounder Keemo Paul, another member of the 2016 WINDIES Under-19 ICC Youth World Cup-winning squad, is selected after his very promising ODI debut performances during the ICC World Cup Qualifier 2018 in Zimbabwe.

“Smith and McCarthy are currently in our WINDIES ‘A’ programme and we believe this experience will be of benefit to them,” said Browne.

“Smith has good pace and has shown good potential as a fast bowler. McCarthy is a talented batsman who has made progress in white-ball cricket.”

Browne added: “Paul has really grasped his opportunity following a strong showing in the Super50, the WINDIES ‘A’ series victories against England Lions and he has grabbed his opportunity at international level.  His performances during the ICC World Cup Qualifiers were both exciting and composed and he gets a chance to build on these with his selection for Pakistan.

“Permaul has already had a few opportunities at international level, so he is no stranger to international cricket. He has never played IT20s however, and this will be a welcome opportunity for him to show another dimension to his game.”

On the recall of Ramdin to the squad, Browne said: “Denesh brings a lot of experience and an opportunity to restart his international career. While he will be the primary wicketkeeper in the squad, we also have available Chadwick Walton and Andre Fletcher as back up.”
