Three years after a historic rapprochement between the US and Cuba was announced, the Obama Administration’s point man on Cuba policy, Ben Rhodes, has said that relations between the two countries are “essentially frozen”. “The Trump Administration is playing right into the hands of hardline elements who don’t want to see Cuba evolve in a different direction,” the former deputy national security adviser said, in an extended interview with the BBC’s Will Grant. Rhodes also weighed in on reported health attacks against US embassy staff, saying that he believed Russia or “rogue elements” could be behind the attacks rather than the Cuban government. In June, President Donald Trump announced a rollback of a “completely one-sided deal with Cuba” that he described as “terrible” and “misguided”.
