Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project conquered full power generation of 969MW

LAHORE: The Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project accomplished a momentous milestone, as this project has conquered its greatest power generation capability of 969 megawatts on Tuesday.

It is reported that all the units of the project are producing power to their utmost capacity.

Lieutenant General Muzammil Hussain (retired), Chairman Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) praised the project’s management, engineers and other employees on this execution.

According to details, Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project has four power generating units, individually with a generation capacity of 242.25 MW.

The first unit was commissioned in April 2018, followed by the rest three units coming into operation, each after one month’s gap.

The fourth and last unit was harmonized with the national grid on Monday and has accomplished its maximum power generation capacity on August 14, 2018. It is observed that Neelum-Jhelum is one of the unique state-of-the-art hydropower project, as 90% is constructed underground and beneath the high mountainous areas.

This project is constructed on river Neelum in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, has a dam at Nauseri, an underground waterway system, consisting of 52-kilometre (KM) long tunnels and an underground powerhouse at Chattar Kalas with four power generating units.

It is expected that this project will provide about 5 billion units of electricity to the national grid per year, with annual projected reimbursement of about Rs55 billion.
