Shutdown likely as Rand Paul holds up key vote
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) took to the Senate floor to criticize a spending bill that he says adds billions of dollars to the US deficit without debating amendments to the bill, effectively blocking a key vote that would avoid a government shutdown. Senate leaders have no plans to give Paul a vote on his amendment so that means a shutdown, for at least some period of time, is likely, even though the votes are there in the Senate to pass the deal. Paul's amendment deals with restoring budget caps or not suspending the debt ceiling or some combination of those two ideas, according to a GOP senator.
