ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday removed former finance minister Ishaq Dar from the chairmanship of the Board of Governors (BoG) of University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, while wrapping up the case of absence of the Chairman in UHS, passed the orders of dismissing Dar and appointing a new chairman of the board within 15 days.
Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ishaq Dar was re-elected as chairman of the BoG of the university in December 2015 for a three-year term.
As per the UHS Act, all the administrative and financial decisions required approval from the board of governors of the varsity.
According to sources, no meeting of the board was called in the last couple of years due to the absence of the chairman.
Previously, the varsity remained without a regular vice chancellor for more than 18 months following the retirement of Prof. Mohammad Aslam.
The apex court intervened into the matter and helped appointing a regular vice chancellor of the UHS through a search committee few weeks ago.
It is worth mentioning here that Ishaq Dar was declared fugitive in a case pertaining to assets beyond known sources of income by a Supreme Court bench, which had also ordered National Accountability Bureau to file a corruption reference against him.
The PML-N leader remains in London where he is reportedly undergoing a medical treatment for a heart disease.
On the directives of the top court, the PML-N leader has been blacklisted and his passport was blocked.
