Hanan Hamid: Once showered with praises now victim of cyber lynching

KOCHI: 19-year-old college going Hanan Hamid became prey for cyberbullies after a Malayalam newspaper on Wednesday reported a story about the difficult circumstances in order to support her family.

Hanan became an overnight sensation after a photograph of her selling fish in college uniform went viral. Netizens in Kerala hailed and applauded showered praises for her courage and determination.

But, there are also some on social media who accused her for making up this story and questioning the authenticity and honesty of her claims.

So, who is Hanan? What’s the real story of Hanan?

According to Matrabhumi, Hanan was born to Hamid and Zairabi, an electrician-homemaker couple in a wealthy joint family in Thrissur. When she was barely eight, her cousins soon became strangers following an ugly partition spat and father Hamid with mother Zairabi, Hanan and toddler brother move to a rented house.

Her father did a lot of businesses and after signing a contract a popular bar, fell victim to alcohol addiction.

Next, Hamid and mentally-disturbed Zairabi got legally separated just before Hanan was about to write her Higher secondary board examinations.

Hanan, a third-year chemistry student of Al Azhar College in Thodupuzha told to the newspaper that faced a tough life since she was a seventh standard student.

She took up different jobs, from taking tutions to flower girl in event management functions and as a fish vendor in the city after college hours.

She is now criticised for no reason for working hard to eke out a living. Unfazed by the virulent and abusive attack, Hanan on Thursday said, “I will be living as I lived till yesterday. The troll makers can roll their bulldozer over my body, but I will continue to live. I will live even by washing dishes,” she told reporters here.

The director of the Al Azhar College stated that the story of Hanan is true.

A woman running a tailoring shop in the one-room rented by Ms Hamid vouched for her claims.

“The girl has been staying in the room for the past two months, and she had gone for selling fish to raise money for her education. She was always telling me about her wish to become a doctor,” the woman told a TV channel, reported DC.
