NEW YORK: Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi has emphasized the need for swift and effective implementation of the UN goal of energy for all.

While chairing the opening session of a meeting on Sustainable Energy, Pakistan envoy said energy is central to the achievement of both the development agenda and the Paris agreement on climate change.

Ms Lodhi said: “Effective and comprehensive implementation of the energy goal is therefore both important and urgent.”

She said Sustainable Development Goal-7, aimed to ensure access for all to clean and affordable energy, laid specific focus on energy as a universal goal.

The Pakistani envoy while emphasizing energy’s essential role to achieving economic growth and development said it is central to securing almost all the other SDGs such as poverty eradication, climate change, employment, education, food and water security.

She said, “The standalone energy goal and its targets are all encompassing. Universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services is fundamental together with renewable energy and energy efficiency.”

Permanent Missions to the United Nations of Pakistan, Denmark and Norway organized the meeting in cooperation with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).
