Shehbaz embarks on first visit to Karachi as PML-N president

Shehbaz Sharif

KARACHI: Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday arrived in the metropolis on a first visit after assuming charge as president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The chief minister landed at Karachi airport where a large number of party workers welcomed him. Subsequently, he was driven to Governor House amid tight security.

The roads from the airport to Governor House have been festooned with banners and streamers featuring the chief minister’s pictures.

The PML-N president will hold discussions with party leaders over a range of political matters, including organization of the party in Sindh province ahead of the coming general elections.

He will also hold meetings with delegations of Muttahid Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), business community and civil society.

Later in the day, he will address a workers’ convention in the metropolis.

On March 13, Shehbaz was elected unopposed as PML-N chief as no other party leader filed nomination papers to contest the intra-party election for the party presidency.

Former premier Nawaz Sharif remained the party chief until the Supreme Court declared him ineligible to head his party.

On Feb 21, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar gave the verdict on a number of petitions challenging the controversial amendment to the Election Act 2017, which allowed Sharif to head his party.

The court declared that all decisions taken by Nawaz as PML-N president since July 28 stand null and void after the judgment.
